This year, we are committed to growing our sports section. Mason has 22 NCAA Division I sports teams and various club sports that we want to provide coverage of.
The Sports section is currently run by the Sports Editor Gabriel King and Assistant Sports Editor Carson Alger.
King majors in Communication and decided to take the position of Sports Editor because of a passion for sports and goal of becoming a sports journalist. Alger, who also majors in Communication, took on the role of Assistant Editor to express his passion for sports and continue his involvement in the Mason community.
Sports are a big part of the community at Mason, as there is a rich history of success in many of them. With “400 student-athletes currently competing in 22 varsity sports”, Mason Athletics is one of the largest groups that brings life to campus outside of academics.
With this, we are looking to showcase the work of student-athletes. We believe that Communication and Sport Management majors, along with anyone with a passion for sports, would be the perfect fit for that.
Students of any experience are welcome to join and strengthen their skills. Members of the Fourth Estate may choose their availability to the team in regards to writing on a weekly, monthly or semesterly basis.
Writers at the Fourth Estate have creative freedom when it comes to story ideas. Upon joining our team, you would be able to write articles about teams and players right here at Mason. This would allow you to work with the coaches and players of our sports teams. Your is published on gmufourthestate.com, which is a valuable experience.
Working with the Fourth Estate gives reporters publications which they can show to potential employers, adding a personal flair to a sports-themed resume.
We encourage students interested in writing about sports for Fourth Estate to reach out to our emails below for more information. From there, we may provide appropriate training and resources to get started.
We cannot wait to have you on the team!
Sincerely,
Gabriel King, Sports Editor
