First Week Offers Variety Of Events For Mason Students

Thursday, Aug. 23, George Mason University welcomed incoming freshmen to campus with its annual move-in, officially commencing its 69th school year. Here at Mason, opportunities are endless and the best way to get involved is to get started early. Whether you’re into sports, arts, social events, or food, August through September will mostly be consumed by your favorite extracurriculars. Here is a lay out of some things the first week will offer.
Sunday, Aug. 26: Pancakes in the Park
Mason Cru is providing pancakes, games, and music to students who show up to Presidents Park lawn from 8-10 p.m.
Monday, Aug. 27: Ice Cream Social
Show up to Rogers and WhiteTop quad on-campus from 8-10 p.m. for lawn games and ice cream sponsored by InterVarsity.
Tuesday, Aug. 28: Mason Hillel’s “Tye Dye Palooza”
Mason Hillel will be hosting a tie-dying T-shirt and pizza event from 3-5 p.m. in East Plaza.
Tuesday, Aug. 28: Sexual Chocolate
In the Johnson Center Cinema, the Student Support and Advocacy Center (SSAC) will be putting on two sessions for students to eat chocolate and learn about safe sex/healthy relationships. Last year’s goodie bags even included a little bit of both. The first session will be from 8-10 p.m. and the second is at midnight.
Wednesday, Aug. 29: Part-Time Job Fair
Featuring on-campus and local job opportunities, the part-time job fair is a terrific way to become part of the Mason community. Head out to Dewberry Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a resume and a can-do attitude.
Wednesday, Aug. 29: Rockin’ with REC
From 6-9 p.m. at the Recreation and Athletic Complex (RAC), Mason Recreation—along with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Recreation Health & Tourism, Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), and SSAC—will have games, activities, food, and T-shirts for interested students. Any students looking to join a club team will be accommodated by informed Mason staff who can answer any questions.
Thursday, Aug. 30: IVth Night Welcome Back Carnival
The Patriot Activities Council (PAC) is hosting this back-to-school carnival at Wilkins and East Plaza from 4-8 p.m. There will be T-shirts, food, music, and more; all free with a Mason ID!
Friday, Aug. 31: National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Step Expo
Interested in going Greek? The National Pan-Hellenic Council will be showcasing many of the sororities and fraternities Mason has. The event is in Dewberry Hall from 7-9 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 1: Magician-Comedian Ben Seidman
At 7 p.m. in the Johnson Center Cinema, comedian and magician Ben Seidman will be wowing and entertaining students—a free event provided with proof of Mason ID.
