As part of our “Interview the Candidates” series, Fourth Estate will be interviewing all four candidates for Student Government President and Vice President.
Chandler Jenkins and Obum Egolum are running for Student Body President and Vice President for the 2015-16 school year on a slogan of “Empower Mason.”
“I think we chose the word empower because it’s such a strong word, it makes a statement,” said Jenkins, who is currently the executive undersecretary for Student Involvement. “We want every student to know that their voice matters.”
Jenkins is also a sister of Pi Beta Phi, a Patriot Leader, a member of Best Buddies, and a member of honor societies Lambda Sigma and Delta Alpha Pi. She was a former student senator and vice chairwoman of University Life.
Part of their platform is to create a unified Mason community.
“I chose Mason because of its diversity and I feel like it’s a shame that we have so many different cultures, ethnicities, racial and religious backgrounds and we’re not taking advantage of it,” said Egolum, who is currently the vice chairman of University Life. “So we want to create and foster a community, one community not multiple communities, just so students can get the most of their experience at Mason.”
Egolum is also the vice president of the African Student Association, a member of Black Student Alliance, Caribbean Student Association, Catholic Campus Ministry, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation and was a former student senator.
The candidate debate is on Thursday, March 26 and elections are from March 30-April 3.
