COVID-19 cases remain low at Mason

As September falls into October, Mason continues to make efforts toward keeping campus COVID-19 cases low. With a mask and vaccination mandate put on campus over the summer and a daily COVID-19 health check, COVID-19 cases continue to remain low.

 According to the Mason COVID-19 dashboard, from Sept. 19 to Sept. 25 — the fifth week of classes — eight new students tested positive out of 4,900 students tested. Three employees tested positive out of 549 employees tested. This is a 0.2% positivity rate for students and a 0.5% positivity rate for employees.

 As of the sixth week of classes, from Sept. 26 to Sept. 30, eight new students tested positive out of 2,569 students tested. Two employees tested positive out of 674 employees tested. This is a 0.3% positivity rate for both students and employees.

 Out of 30,528 students, 27,229 students have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, having either received both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, with a vaccination rate of 94.6%. Out of 6,845 employees, 6,351 are vaccinated, with a vaccination rate of 91.5%.

 In Fairfax County, 734,182 residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Oct. 1. This is a vaccination rate of 73.6% of people 18 and older.

 In Virginia, 5,784, 359 residents are fully vaccinated, with a vaccination rate of 60.3% of the total state population as of Oct. 1.
