The Washington Capitals fell 2-3 in their season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins Oct. 13.
It was a tight, defensive battle that ended in shootouts.
The Capitals struck first with a goal by Andre Burakovsky 59 seconds into the first quarter, but their lead slipped in the second quarter when Pittsburgh scored two unanswered goals. Burakovsky, however, scored the tying goal in the third quarter.
Despite both teams taking a combined 26 shots (six of which missed and seven of which were blocked), neither could score the go-ahead goal.
The game went into overtime, but still no one could prevail.
In shootouts, Pittsburgh outscored Washington 3-2 and clinched the game.
