Mason baseball defeated the Fordham Rams 7-4 today at Spuhler Field. A five run bottom of the 7th propelled the Patriots to the win. A strong pitching performance from Anthony Montefusco shut down the Rams’ offense for most of the game.

Montefusco broke the tie in the bottom of the 3rd with a RBI double plating third baseman Blaise Fernandez. A costly error by Fordham led to Montefusco scoring just one batter later. Fernandez led the seventh inning off with a double off the wall in center field. Back-to-back infield singles by Tucker Tobin and Josh Leemhuis left the bases loaded and nobody out. Montefusco then walked pushing Fernandez across the plate. A single by Toto scored two and pushed the lead to 5-1. Chris Cook’s RBI single made it a five run lead for the Patriots. Luke Willis then flew out to center field adding another run of insurance for Mason.

The story of the day was starting pitcher Anthony Montefusco. He hurled seven innings of two hit ball while only allowing one run. He recorded 10 strikeouts and only gave up two walks. He was able to be effective deep into the game making it easy on the bullpen. Mark Maskimow was able to close it out after Taylor Hunt gave up one in the 8th and two in the 9th.

Fernandez and Toto had great offensive days for the Patriots. Fernandez went 3-for-4 and scoring twice while Toto went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s and one run scored.

The victory gives the Patriots 12 wins on the season against seven losses.
