Mason defeated St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon 6-1, taking the weekend series 2-1. Pitcher John Williams got the win after throwing 6.2 innings of one run ball and Tyler Zumbro finished it off.
Williams went 6.2 innings allowing just one run while giving up six hits. He shut down the Bonnies through the first four innings but ran into some trouble in the fifth and the sixth inning. He was able to settle down and get out of both unscathed. In the seventh a couple of two out hits plated a runner and forced him out of the game. Rich McMahon came in and retired the last batter to get out of the inning. Tyler Zumbro came in and pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth, sealing the victory for the Patriots.
The Patriot offense started out hot when Luke Willis led off the game with a single, shortly after 3B Blaise Fernandez drove him in with a double down the left field line. With Fernandez on third RF Josh Leemhuis hit a fly ball to right field allowing Fernandez to tag and score making it 2-0. With the bases loaded in the second inning Fernandez was HBP allowing 1B Mick Foley to trot home. The offense was silent until the eighth inning when they scored three times giving the Patriots plenty of insurance going into the ninth. Mick Foley drove in a run with an RBI single and Chris Cook scored on a passed ball. With two outs Foley made a great play sliding around the catcher when it seemed like he was dead in the water.
George Mason improves to 20-12 on the season and 7-3 on A-10 play. The loss drove St. Bonaventure to 8-20 on the season and 2-8 in A10 play.
