Set and ready for the new academic year

BY HALEY A. HUNT, COPY EDITOR

Hello Patriots!

My name is Haley Hunt, one of two Copy Editors for Fourth Estate. I will be editing mainly news and culture articles here. I am a freshman majoring in Communication with a concentration in Journalism.

I came straight from high school in Maryland and yes, I do love Old Bay. I am eager to pursue journalism in my college career and beyond. My ultimate goal in the ways of my career is to explore the many lenses and perspectives that people can have on current events.

I spent three years on my high school’s student paper, working as a writer for two years and as news editor during senior year. Writing has been a constant interest in my life even before that, but what truly made me realize my passion for journalism was attending the Washington Journalism and Media Conference the summer of 2025.

Hearing from active journalists and learning the full extent of their role inspired me to change from my original plan of majoring in Creative Writing to Journalism.

As a copy editor, my role is to edit articles according to the Fourth Estate and AP news style guides, while also fact-checking and helping writers communicate what they intend to. I look forward to working with writers and my fellow editors!

Journalists are historians of the modern day, and I will ensure that if there is a story you want to tell, it will be heard. Everyone deserves the opportunity to express themselves.

George Mason is a beautiful, diverse community where every voice is uniquely valuable.

Thank you, Mason Nation,

Haley Hunt, Copy Editor
