(Giuseppe S. DiStefano / Fourth Estate)

Laying out ambitions for the fall 2026 semester

BY GIUSEPPE S. DISTEFANO, OPINION EDITOR

My name is Giuseppe DiStefano, and I’m happy to serve as Opinion Editor for fall 2026. I am a first-semester graduate student in the Schar School of Policy and Government, pursuing my master’s in International Security. I have been at George Mason University since 2024, when I transferred from my small community college in Florida, and I haven’t looked back.

When I first came to Mason, I struggled to find ways to express myself and connect with people on campus because I was too nervous to get out of my shell. I never considered the platform and experience that something like Fourth Estate would offer as someone who wanted to become more confident with my writing, which is why I am honored to be in the position I am now as an editor.

This semester, I seek to use my position to help writers understand the resources and opportunities they have through Fourth Estate to write about topics that affect them.

What excites me most about the opinion section are the topics that writers ask to write about, because it gives me a front-row seat to the absolute creativity that students at Mason have to offer. I want to help students have the platform to express their views and show off their skills as writers!

To all of the people who wouldn’t ordinarily go out of their way to write something so publicly, go for it! As cheesy as it is, the best stories are often the ones that go unwritten, so by all means, speak up and write something for Fourth Estate!

I’m looking forward to hearing what you have to say, Mason Nation!

Best,

Giuseppe DiStefano, Opinion Editor
