Democrat Zohran Mamdani has been elected the next mayor of New York City, according to MSNBC.

The New York City Mayoral election has historically attracted energy.

This year, the nation’s eyes have been on this race since it began — including President Trump’s. Since Mamdani joined the race, Americans across the nation have waited with bated breath to see whether a Democratic socialist candidate could win control of the financial capital of the world.

President Trump has threatened to cut federal funding from the city should Mamdani win.

Nevertheless, the night’s results have made one thing clear: Americans appear ready for change.

Mamdani defeated independent candidate and former New York governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s victory over Cuomo in the Democratic Party primary was a major upset.

Current New York City Mayor Eric Adams also declined to back Mamdani, instead casting his ballot for Andrew Cuomo. Adam’s decision drew some attention given his own recent legal troubles.

Mamdani, 34, has become the youngest mayor of New York City in a century. His campaign has been marked by partisan discord and national scrutiny.

Despite strong polling numbers and support from progressive Democrats such as U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, key Democratic figures — including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former President Barack Obama — declined to endorse him.

Schumer also refused to say who he voted for in the election.

Critics of Mamdani have focused on his past comments criticizing Israel’s government and his support for progressive policies such as defunding the police.

Many have expressed more concern over what Mamdani opposes than what he supports.

The Democratic Party’s inability to rally behind a rising candidate underscores its internal divisions. Now that Mamdani has won without the party’s full backing, New Yorkers — and the nation — are watching to see how his victory could reshape the politics of the Left moving forward.
