Mason’s Egyptian, Arab and Moroccan Student Unions hosted a collaborative, multicultural event known as the GMU Soccer World Cup Tournament to unite communities around campus through a shared passion for soccer.

The World Cup Tournament occurred over the course of two days at the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC) field. The multicultural event was also open to other Registered Student Organizations.

With 12 different RSO’s representing countries and cultures from South Asia, the Middle East and African regions, the event was packed with excitement and lots of culture. A high-energy crowd cheered from the stands and supported their teams while players tore up the field.

Teams represented their culture in matching T-shirts while fans chanted and brought flags from their countries to hang up around the field, creating a thrilling atmosphere. Organizers from the Egyptian, Arab and Moroccan Student Unions catered pizza for players and watchers.

“Our biggest takeaway from the games was the importance of uniting different communities. Twelve different RSO’s all representing different cultures, countries and regions all come together as a community,” said Adam Robie, member of the Egyptian Student Union.

The organizations participating in the tournament were put into four competing groups on the first day.

Group A consisted of teams from Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt. Group B consisted of teams from Morocco, Arab Regional and Kuwait. Group C consisted of teams from Africa, Saudi Arabia and Sudan. Lastly, Group D consisted of teams from Palestine, Pakistan and Eritrea/Ethiopia.

The winners from each group would go on to play the next day until there was one final winner.

The Saudi Student Union dominated the competition on the final day, becoming the champions of the 2025 George Mason University World Cup Tournament. The Moroccan Student Union placed second and was crowned the runners-up, and the Pakistani Student Association came in third place.

Players from all teams celebrated by hoisting their flags and uniting with each other over a successful tournament, reflecting the Mason community’s passion for diversity and intercultural connection.

Organizers hope to continue to host the World Cup Tournament as an annual event, broadening horizons by inviting even more student unions and clubs.
